Spain Strengthens its Leadership in LEED Certification in 2024 Maintaining its Position as the Leading Country in Europe and Sixth Worldwide
October, 2025
The transformation of the Spanish real estate sector is advancing at great speed. Sustainability, which only a few years ago seemed like a long-term goal, now sets the pace for many of the most important developments. This trend is reflected in the growth of LEED certification, an international standard that assesses the environmental and energy efficiency of buildings.
In 2024, Spain reaffirmed its position as a European benchmark in sustainable construction. With 137 certified projects and a total area of 1,786,773 square meters, the country strengthened its commitment to more responsible and efficient building practices. Of these projects, 39 achieved Platinum level, the highest distinction within the system. Among the most notable buildings are the Skylight office complex in Madrid, with 91 points, Aribu 195-197-199 in Barcelona with 90 points, and the Hotel-Apartments in Pozuelo de Alarcón with 87 points.
These results confirm that companies in the sector are investing in high-quality projects, prioritizing energy efficiency, technological innovation, and user well-being. From 2000 to 2024, LEED certification in Spain has shown steady growth. The country has held the top position in Europe for six years, second in Latin America for four years, and sixth worldwide outside the United States, reinforcing its role as a leader in sustainable construction.
The increase in LEED certification not only brings environmental benefits but also enhances asset value, boosts investor appeal, and ensures better conditions for occupants. The widespread adoption of this certification is a clear signal of where the real estate sector is heading. For developers, investment funds, and property owners, investing in sustainability is no longer optional it is a profitable and differentiating strategy.
